Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has pledged to examine and publicly respond to the recommendations of the judicial commission that investigated the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
Makinde gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving the commission’s report at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
The commission was chaired by retired Justice Professor Mojeed Owoade and was established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.
The governor said his administration would study the findings and take appropriate action on the recommendations.
“We will examine the recommendations of this report and publicly respond to them. Confidentiality will not be used as an excuse to avoid accountability,” Makinde said.
Inquiry Focuses on Schoolchildren’s Safety
The commission was established following the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in the Ahoro Esinele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area.
When inaugurating the panel in July, Makinde said the incident raised serious concerns about the safety of children and the responsibility of government to protect access to education. He also stressed that the safe return of victims should be followed by an examination of what went wrong.
The inquiry was intended to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify relevant shortcomings and propose measures that could help prevent similar occurrences.
Government Faces Accountability Test
Makinde’s promise of a public response places emphasis on transparency in the handling of the commission’s recommendations.
The implementation of any proposed measures will be important in determining whether the inquiry leads to changes in school security, emergency response arrangements and protection for vulnerable communities.
The governor said confidentiality would not be used to avoid accountability, signalling his administration’s intention to address the findings publicly.
The report now provides a basis for assessing the circumstances of the abduction and identifying steps that may strengthen security around schools and communities in Oyo State.
