The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said only leaders who emerge through free, fair and credible elections deserve to be addressed as “Excellency.”

Obi made the declaration during an NDC Obi-Talks town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he interacted with party members and residents on issues affecting Nigerians.

The former Anambra State governor used the event to emphasise the importance of credible elections and the need for citizens to protect their votes.

Obi Speaks On Electoral Mandate

Obi said political legitimacy should be rooted in a genuine electoral mandate.

He argued that the title “Excellency” should reflect the authority and trust conferred on a leader through a credible election rather than merely being attached to someone occupying a political office.

In a statement shared on his official X account, Obi reiterated his position that leaders must emerge through a free, fair and credible electoral process.

Focus On Issues Affecting Nigerians

The town hall meeting also provided an opportunity for Obi to engage supporters and residents on several national issues.

Among the issues discussed were employment, healthcare, education, security and economic opportunities.

Obi has consistently made economic development, job creation and human capital investment major parts of his political message.

He has also repeatedly argued that Nigeria’s resources should be managed more efficiently to produce tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.

2027 Election

Obi is now preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election under the NDC platform after the opposition landscape underwent significant realignment.

His political camp has positioned the forthcoming election as an opportunity for Nigerians to demand stronger accountability from political leaders.

The former governor has also repeatedly called on voters to remain engaged in the electoral process.

His latest remarks suggest that electoral credibility will remain a central component of his campaign ahead of the 2027 polls.

Why Credible Elections Matter

Nigeria’s elections have frequently faced concerns surrounding vote manipulation, violence, voter intimidation and the credibility of electoral processes.

INEC has introduced several measures aimed at improving election administration, while political parties and civil society groups continue to demand greater transparency.

Obi’s call for free and credible elections therefore comes as political parties begin preparations for what is expected to be a closely contested presidential race.
