The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to cushion the impact of elevated global crude oil prices on Nigerian households and businesses.

The company said the temporary petrol discount at its retail stations was intended to provide direct relief to consumers facing higher fuel costs amid volatility in international oil markets linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

In a statement issued on October 9, 2026, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, said the company understood the pressure that rising petrol prices place on everyday life, from commuting expenses to the cost of operating businesses.

NNPC said it would continue working with the government and relevant stakeholders to reduce the burden on households, businesses and the wider economy.

The company explained that the discount had initially been introduced on October 1 to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary and would continue until October 31 across NNPC Retail stations nationwide.

It stressed that the measure did not represent a reinstatement of the petrol subsidy removed in 2023.

According to the company, the arrangement involves a temporary reduction in its retail profit margin and does not establish a uniform national pump price or change the market-based pricing framework for petroleum products.

The distinction is significant because the discount applies to NNPC retail outlets rather than automatically requiring every fuel retailer in the country to sell at the same price.

For motorists and commercial transport operators, the immediate effect will depend on the prices offered at participating stations and the extent to which the discount translates into lower transport and distribution costs.

The intervention comes as fuel prices remain a major component of Nigeria’s cost-of-living debate. Higher petrol costs can feed into transport fares, food distribution and the operating expenses of businesses that depend on road transport or petrol-powered equipment.

While the temporary discount may provide some relief to customers using participating stations, questions remain about the longer-term affordability of petrol after the initiative expires.

NNPC said it remained committed to reliable product supply and responsible customer service, urging Nigerians not to interpret the measure as a return to the former subsidy regime.
