Oluwatosin Abidakun died after an articulated truck struck a motorcycle near Agodi Gardens, while another corps member sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.

A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Oluwatosin Abidakun, has died in a road crash involving an articulated truck in Ibadan, Oyo State, just days after resuming her primary assignment at the Oyo State House of Assembly.

The fatal incident occurred on Monday around Agodi Gardens in Ibadan North Local Government Area, according to reports on the crash.

Abidakun was reportedly travelling home on a motorcycle with another corps member when the truck struck them. She died at the scene, while the other corps member sustained injuries and was taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for treatment.

The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, expressed sorrow over her death, describing the incident as a painful loss for her family, colleagues and the wider community.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ogundoyin said Abidakun had only recently begun her national service, making her death particularly heartbreaking because of the opportunities and aspirations that lay ahead of her.

He extended his condolences to her family, friends and fellow corps members and wished the injured survivor a speedy recovery.

Eyewitnesses raise questions about events before the crash

Accounts from eyewitnesses suggested that the truck had allegedly struck several vehicles around the Sango area before continuing towards Agodi Gardens, where the fatal collision occurred.

One eyewitness alleged that the driver was attempting to escape after the earlier collisions and that motorists whose vehicles had been hit pursued the truck.

These accounts raise questions about the sequence of events before the fatal crash. However, the allegations concerning the driver’s actions remain eyewitness accounts and should not be treated as established findings without confirmation from investigators.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the death of the female corps member and said the injured motorcycle rider had been evacuated to UCH for medical attention.

The agency’s Oyo State Sector Commander, Kehinde Dahunsi, was identified in the supplied account as confirming the incident.

Road safety concerns and the cost of preventable crashes

The tragedy has renewed attention to the dangers posed by collisions involving heavy-duty vehicles, particularly in busy urban areas where motorcycles, cars, pedestrians and commercial trucks share the roads.

Articulated trucks can cause catastrophic injuries when they collide with smaller vehicles. Effective vehicle maintenance, responsible driving, enforcement of traffic regulations and prompt emergency response are essential to reducing the risks.

The loss of a young corps member at the beginning of her national service is also a painful reminder of the human consequences of road crashes for families, colleagues and public institutions.

The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the reported earlier collisions, require a thorough investigation to establish what happened and determine whether any traffic offences or other violations occurred.
