Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has expressed confidence that a joint presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso would have a stronger chance of winning the 2027 presidential election than if both politicians contested separately.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has predicted that a united presidential ticket featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso would outperform both President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 general election.
Speaking during an interview, Lawal argued that an alliance between the two opposition figures would significantly improve their electoral prospects by combining their political strengths and regional support bases.
‘Together They Stand a Better Chance’
Lawal said Obi and Kwankwaso would struggle if they contested separately but would become formidable if they ran on a joint ticket.
According to him, such an alliance could command broad national support and present a stronger challenge to the ruling party in the presidential election.
Rates Candidates’ Chances
In the interview, the former SGF offered his personal assessment of the leading contenders’ chances in the 2027 race.
He estimated that an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket would have about a 70 percent chance of victory, while assigning President Bola Tinubu a 50 percent chance. He also said he does not believe Atiku Abubakar would win the election. Lawal stressed that the figures reflected his personal political opinion rather than polling data or official projections.
2027 Political Realignments Continue
Lawal’s remarks come amid ongoing political discussions over possible alliances ahead of the 2027 general election, with several opposition figures exploring coalition options aimed at challenging the ruling APC.
No formal announcement has been made confirming a joint Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket.
