The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdurosheed Akanbi, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider granting presidential amnesty to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The monarch said such a step could contribute to national cohesion and help address longstanding grievances associated with the South-East.
In a statement issued through his media aide, Ibrahim Alli, the monarch described the historical trauma associated with the Nigerian Civil War as part of the context behind continuing grievances among some sections of the Igbo population.
He commended what he described as the Tinubu administration’s efforts toward inclusion but argued that further steps were necessary to deepen national reconciliation.
The monarch specifically called for a presidential amnesty for Kanu, saying the move could contribute to a broader national dialogue.
Kanu remains a highly controversial political figure, and his case has remained a major issue in discussions around security, separatist agitation and national reconciliation.
The Oluwo’s appeal therefore adds another traditional voice to the debate over how the Federal Government should approach the longstanding issue.
