The Nigeria Police Force has intensified security preparations ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election, deploying a Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), 30 Commissioners of Police and thousands of other personnel across the state.
The deployment is part of measures aimed at ensuring a peaceful and secure electoral process as Osun residents prepare to vote.
The police have also announced plans to restrict movement in the state during the election period, with exceptions for essential duties, security personnel and eligible voters travelling to exercise their franchise.
The Force is deploying about 15,000 operatives for the election, alongside senior officers and specialised units.
Police authorities have warned residents against electoral offences, including intimidation, vote-buying, stalking and ballot-box snatching.
Security agencies are also expected to tighten control around the state’s borders and major routes as part of the overall election security arrangement.
The heightened deployment comes against the backdrop of concerns over political tension and allegations of violence ahead of the poll.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has separately urged political parties and candidates to honour the peace accord signed ahead of the election and commit themselves to a peaceful exercise.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, with the security arrangements designed to protect voters, electoral officials and election materials before, during and after voting.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm, obey lawful instructions and avoid actions capable of disrupting the electoral process.
