The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Olooye Adegboyega Taofeek Adegoke, has warned politicians and their supporters against thuggery, intimidation and electoral violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Adegoke gave the warning while responding to questions from journalists at Dominion Radio and Television, where he called on political parties to ensure that their supporters maintained peace before, during and after the elections.

He argued that violence could discourage eligible voters from participating in the electoral process and undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.

The governorship candidate also stressed that no political party could rely exclusively on its membership to win an election, noting that electoral success requires broader public support.

He urged politicians to concentrate on peaceful campaigns, constructive engagement and policies capable of addressing the needs of residents rather than resorting to intimidation or violence.

Adegoke’s remarks come as political parties and aspirants begin strengthening their structures ahead of the 2027 elections, a period often marked by heightened competition and disputes among political supporters.

Election-related violence remains a concern for Nigeria’s democratic process because it can threaten public safety, restrict political participation and undermine the credibility of electoral outcomes.

Political parties, security agencies and electoral authorities have important roles to play in preventing violence, investigating reported offences and ensuring that voters can participate without fear.

Adegoke’s appeal adds to calls for issue-based campaigning and peaceful political competition in Oyo State and across the country.
