The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has claimed that no state governor saved as much money as he did during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.
Obi made the assertion during a town hall meeting with supporters in the United Kingdom, where he discussed public accountability, prudent management of government resources and the economic challenges confronting Nigeria.
The former Anambra governor urged Nigerians to elect leaders with demonstrable records of productivity, transparency and responsible financial management, arguing that the country needs a leadership approach that prioritises results over political rhetoric.
Addressing Nigerians living abroad, Obi encouraged them to use their influence to promote responsible leadership and engage relatives at home on the importance of making informed electoral choices.
He also expressed concern about the hardship facing Nigerians, linking the country’s economic difficulties to questions about governance, public spending and the management of national resources.
Obi has frequently cited his experience in Anambra as evidence of his approach to public finance and administration. His latest remarks appear intended to reinforce that argument as political parties and candidates begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
However, his assertion about saving more money than other governors is a comparative claim that would require supporting financial records and an assessment of the savings accumulated by other state administrations to establish independently.
The statement adds to the debate over the records of past and present political officeholders, particularly as voters assess candidates’ claims about fiscal discipline, public-sector efficiency and economic management.
