Former presidential candidate announces resignation from African Democratic Congress ahead of 2027 political realignments
Former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal crises and what he described as a worsening political environment.
Obi disclosed his decision on Sunday via a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, noting that persistent internal conflicts, external interference, and growing hostility within party structures influenced his exit.
According to him, Nigeria’s political space has become increasingly “toxic,” marked by intimidation, insecurity, and pressure on individuals seeking to contribute meaningfully to governance. He added that these conditions have made it difficult to operate effectively within the party.
The former Labour Party flagbearer clarified that his departure was not driven by personal disagreements with ADC leadership. He specifically expressed respect for key figures within the party, including former Senate President David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Obi further suggested that the internal challenges within the ADC mirror issues he previously encountered in other political platforms, including divisions, legal disputes, and systemic pressures that undermine party cohesion.
His resignation comes amid preparations for upcoming party primaries and broader political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with analysts suggesting the move could signal another shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
With Obi’s exit adding to ongoing political reshuffling, attention now turns to his next move and its potential impact on the evolving 2027 electoral dynamics.
