Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he believes the emergence of former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was permitted by God for a particular purpose in Nigeria’s history.
Obi made the remark while reflecting on Nigeria’s political trajectory and his experience in the 2023 presidential election.
The former Anambra State governor also reiterated his position that he won the 2023 presidential election but was not declared the winner.
Obi contested the 2023 election under the Labour Party and finished third behind Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, according to the declared election results.
He subsequently challenged the outcome in court alongside other opposition figures, but the legal challenges did not overturn Tinubu’s victory.
Despite the setback, Obi has remained active in national politics and is now pursuing another presidential bid under the NDC ahead of the 2027 election.
His latest comments reflect the religious and political interpretation he has placed on the events surrounding Nigeria’s recent presidential transitions.
Obi suggested that the successive administrations of Buhari and Tinubu may have been allowed to emerge for a purpose that would eventually become clearer to Nigerians.
The remarks come against the backdrop of an increasingly competitive opposition landscape ahead of 2027, with political parties and presidential aspirants attempting to build structures capable of challenging the APC.
Obi’s continued presidential ambition has also become a major feature of opposition politics, particularly among supporters of the Obidient Movement.
With the 2027 election approaching, the former Anambra governor is expected to continue campaigning on his message of political reform, institutional accountability and economic transformation.
