Seven traders were injured after gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying people returning from a market along the Bukuru Expressway in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, according to the Plateau State Police Command.
Police spokesperson SP Alfred Alabo said preliminary investigations indicated that the vehicle targeted was carrying traders returning from Kara Market in Bukuru.
Seven injured victims were subsequently traced to the Military Clinic at Rukuba Barracks in Jos, where they were receiving medical treatment.
Police launch investigation
Plateau State Commissioner of Police Ayodeji Faniyan directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of investigations to take over the case and work to identify and arrest those responsible.
The police also deployed tactical and anti-robbery teams to strengthen security around the area and intensified intelligence gathering.
The command condemned the attack and appealed to residents to remain calm while reporting suspicious activities.
Conflicting casualty reports
While the police confirmed seven injured victims, some separate reports have alleged that one or more people were killed in the incident. Those reported deaths had not been confirmed in the police account available at the time of publication.
The confirmed position from the Plateau State Police Command remains that seven people were injured.
