Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has warned politicians and their supporters against recruiting thugs, vote buying, arms movement and threats to voters or electoral officials ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Disu issued the warning on Monday in Owerri, Imo State, during the opening of the 2026 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers (CARSPO 2026).
The Inspector-General also unveiled a six-point security roadmap intended to guide police preparations for the election.
Security Priorities
The roadmap includes proactive intelligence gathering, intensive training, inter-agency coordination and accountability measures aimed at improving election security.
Disu said the police would act against offenders irrespective of their status, while urging political actors to compete through ideas rather than violence.
“To politicians and their supporters, my message is simple. Compete with ideas, not with thugs.”
The statement underscores the police leadership’s stated position that election-related offences should be addressed through law enforcement.
