Initiative Targets Children, Pregnant Women And Lactating Mothers
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has launched the South-South zonal phase of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Calabar, Cross River State, as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to address food insecurity and malnutrition.
The programme is designed to provide nutritious food to vulnerable Nigerians, with particular attention to children under six years, pregnant women and lactating mothers.
The South-South rollout marks another stage in the nationwide expansion of the initiative.
First Lady Flags Off Programme
Oluremi Tinubu formally launched the initiative in Calabar on Friday.
The programme is part of the administration’s wider social-intervention efforts aimed at supporting vulnerable households affected by food insecurity.
The First Lady said particular attention would be given to vulnerable groups whose nutritional needs are critical to healthy development.
Among those prioritised are children below six years, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.
Focus On Nutrition
The initiative goes beyond simply distributing food by placing emphasis on nutritious meals.
Poor nutrition during childhood can have long-term consequences for physical and cognitive development, while pregnant and lactating women require adequate nutrition to support both maternal health and child development.
The Federal Government has therefore presented the community food bank programme as one of the mechanisms through which nutritional support can reach vulnerable communities.
According to reports from the launch, the First Lady pledged that no pregnant woman, lactating mother or child under six in the target communities should be denied access to nutritious food.
South-South Rollout
Cross River State hosted the South-South launch of the initiative.
The rollout forms part of a broader national programme being implemented across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
The food bank model is intended to bring assistance closer to communities rather than relying exclusively on centralised distribution.
This approach is expected to make it easier to identify vulnerable households and direct food assistance to those considered most in need.
Government’s Food Security Response
