Outrage grows after fiery criticism targets government’s handling of controversial Islamic cleric

Fresh controversy has erupted online after social commentator Alex Barbir launched a blistering attack on the Federal Government over the treatment of controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi.

Barbir, in a strongly worded statement circulating online, questioned why Gumi continues to enjoy influence and public visibility in Nigeria despite reports that he was allegedly deported from Saudi Arabia — Islam’s holiest land. The critic accused authorities of allegedly giving “kingly treatment” to individuals he described as terror sympathisers.

The explosive remarks have reignited old debates surrounding Sheikh Gumi’s past engagements with armed bandits and his controversial comments on insecurity in Northern Nigeria. Over the years, the cleric has repeatedly defended dialogue with bandit groups as part of efforts to end violent attacks and kidnappings across the region.

Barbir’s comments have since triggered mixed reactions online. While some Nigerians supported his criticism and demanded tougher action against controversial figures linked to insecurity narratives, others accused him of politicising sensitive religious and security issues.

The latest outburst adds another layer to the already heated national conversations surrounding terrorism, insecurity and public trust in government under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
