The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi Sokoto, has called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to national unity, peaceful coexistence and development as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.

In a statement commemorating the anniversary on October 1, Abdullahi described independence as an important milestone in Nigeria’s history and urged citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made by the country’s founding fathers and others who contributed to national development.

He said Nigerians should remain committed to building a peaceful and prosperous country despite the economic, security and social challenges confronting the nation.

Call to rise above divisions

Abdullahi urged citizens to place national interests above ethnic, religious, regional and political differences.

He argued that Nigeria’s progress would depend on the willingness of its people to work together and recognise their shared responsibilities in building the country.

The message comes as Nigerians continue to debate the country’s development trajectory, the cost of living, insecurity and the performance of political institutions.

National anniversaries provide an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, including the achievements recorded and the challenges that remain unresolved.

Independence and the unfinished development agenda

Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. Since then, the country has experienced major political transitions, economic changes and periods of insecurity, while retaining a diverse population and substantial human and natural resources.

Abdullahi’s message called for renewed attention to peace, unity and development, with citizens encouraged to contribute to the country’s progress irrespective of their backgrounds.

The appeal also reflects a recurring theme in Independence Day statements from political parties and public officials: the need to translate national resources and collective aspirations into improved living conditions.

Such calls, however, must be assessed alongside concrete policy proposals and measurable outcomes in areas such as education, healthcare, employment, security and infrastructure.

Political leaders urged to promote cohesion

As a governorship candidate, Abdullahi’s statement forms part of the political discussion about the responsibilities of leaders in promoting national cohesion.

The call for unity does not remove the need for debate and accountability. Rather, it places emphasis on conducting political disagreements peacefully and ensuring that differences do not undermine citizens’ shared rights and interests.

As Nigeria moves beyond its 66th anniversary, the challenge remains turning appeals for unity and development into practical efforts that improve citizens’ lives and strengthen confidence in public institutions.
