Omokri Says FBI Records Do Not Necessarily Mean Criminal History
Reno Omokri, Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has no criminal record in the United States, Nigeria or elsewhere.
Omokri made the statement while responding to renewed discussion over FBI records relating to Tinubu and other major Nigerian political figures.
‘FBI Records Are Not Necessarily Criminal’
Omokri argued that the existence of an individual’s name in FBI records does not automatically mean the person has a criminal record.
He said government files can contain different types of information, including biographical, financial and investigative material, without establishing criminal conduct.
Omokri also claimed that other major presidential candidates, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have FBI records and argued that the existence of such records should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of criminality.
Omokri References 1993 Investigation
According to Omokri, the FBI material being discussed relates to a 1993 investigation involving several people.
He argued that the presence of Tinubu’s name in investigative records should be distinguished from proof that he was convicted or had a criminal record.
The remarks come amid renewed public discussion of US law-enforcement records concerning Tinubu and the ongoing FOIA-related controversy over access to FBI documents.
