President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged chairmen of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas to translate the principles of federal character into practical and equitable governance at the grassroots.
Tinubu gave the charge on Monday in Abuja at a two-day workshop organised by the Federal Character Commission (FCC) in partnership with the All Progressives Governors Forum.
The President was represented at the event by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Tinubu urged the council chairmen to ensure that appointments, administration and the distribution of opportunities and resources reflect fairness and inclusion.
He stressed that Nigeria’s diversity should be treated as an asset and managed through policies that promote equity and national cohesion.
The workshop, themed “Translating Federal Character Principles into Local Governance: Bridging Policy and Practice,” was designed to strengthen understanding and implementation of the federal character principle at the local government level.
The Federal Character Commission describes the principle as a constitutional framework intended to promote equitable representation and prevent domination by a particular state, ethnic group or region in public institutions.
Tinubu’s directive therefore places local government authorities at the centre of efforts to make the principle more visible in grassroots administration, particularly in appointments and access to government opportunities.
The President has previously charged the Federal Character Commission to uphold fairness and justice in its mandate, describing the commission as an important institution for managing Nigeria’s diversity and strengthening national stability.
