President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his determination to seek re-election in 2027, declaring that he is ready for a fair democratic contest and will “wrestle” his opponents to the finish line rather than hand over power without a political fight.
President Tinubu made the remarks while receiving members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Addressing concerns over the political climate ahead of the next general election, the President stressed that democracy is built on competition and that every aspirant has the constitutional right to contest for power. However, he insisted that no candidate should expect an easy path to the presidency.
‘We’ll Wrestle to the Finishing Line’
Tinubu said politics is a contest of ideas and popular support, adding that he intends to remain fully engaged until the final vote is counted.
According to the President:
“Those who want to take power from me should come and contest. We will wrestle ourselves to the finishing line. That is what democracy is about.”
He maintained that every political party has an equal opportunity to campaign and seek the mandate of Nigerians through the ballot box.
Defends Democratic Institutions
Tinubu also reiterated his confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that the electoral umpire remains neutral despite criticisms from opposition parties.
He argued that allegations of bias against INEC are unfounded and urged political actors to focus on engaging voters instead of questioning democratic institutions.
Political Temperature Rising
The President’s comments come as political parties intensify consultations and coalition talks ahead of the 2027 elections.
His remarks are expected to further shape political conversations as both the ruling APC and opposition parties continue preparations for what analysts expect to be a fiercely contested presidential race.
