The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will soon announce another salary increase for members of the Armed Forces as part of efforts to improve the welfare of military personnel and their families.
The Federal Government has indicated that another upward review of soldiers’ salaries is imminent following public concerns over the recently approved ₦100,000 basic monthly salary for military personnel.
Speaking at a training and empowerment programme for widows and wives of Armed Forces personnel in Abuja, the Minister of Defence said President Tinubu remains committed to improving the welfare of serving personnel in recognition of their sacrifices in defending the country.
Fresh Pay Rise Coming
According to the minister, the President is expected to unveil another salary increase soon, although he did not disclose the amount or the implementation date.
He said the administration is determined to ensure that members of the Armed Forces receive better remuneration alongside improved welfare packages, accommodation and other benefits.
Backlash Over ₦100,000 Salary
The announcement comes after widespread reactions from serving and retired military personnel, many of whom argued that the ₦100,000 basic salary recently approved by the Federal Government is insufficient given Nigeria’s rising cost of living.
Several personnel had appealed to the government for a more substantial review, citing inflation and increasing family responsibilities.
Support Beyond Salaries
The Defence Minister also stressed that government support extends beyond salary increases.
He said the empowerment programme for military families was designed to provide entrepreneurship and business skills that would enable spouses of personnel to generate additional income while soldiers remain deployed across the country.
