President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states to strengthen efforts against terrorism and banditry, saying closer collaboration is needed to secure the North-East and sustain development.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged governors from the six North-East states to step up efforts in tackling terrorism, banditry and other security threats confronting the region.
The President gave the charge on Thursday while receiving a delegation of governors, ministers, lawmakers, traditional rulers and other political stakeholders from Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The delegation visited the President following his decision to retain Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
‘Do More for the People’
Addressing the delegation, Tinubu thanked the North-East governors for their support but urged them to redouble their efforts in delivering security, stability and improved welfare for residents.
According to the President, while the Federal Government has made progress in stabilising the economy, sub-national governments must also play a stronger role in confronting insecurity and improving the lives of citizens.
“The economy is already stabilised… I want to charge you to do more. Nigerians are not asking for too much: simple stability and social welfare,” Tinubu said.
Calls for Greater Collaboration
Tinubu stressed that defeating terrorism and banditry requires sustained cooperation between the Federal Government, state governments, security agencies and local communities.
He urged stakeholders in the region to remain united in confronting violent extremism while advancing socio-economic development across the North-East.
North-East Leaders Reaffirm Support
During the meeting, members of the delegation reaffirmed their support for President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima ahead of the 2027 general election.
The stakeholders, including governors, ministers, lawmakers and traditional rulers, pledged to continue working with the Federal Government on security, infrastructure and development initiatives across the region.
Security Remains a Major Challenge
The North-East has remained one of Nigeria’s regions most affected by insurgency and violent extremism for more than a decade.
Although security agencies have recorded successes against terrorist groups in recent years, attacks by insurgents and other armed groups continue to pose significant humanitarian and security challenges in parts of the region.
