The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has endorsed the Federal Government’s Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP), a programme designed to provide a route to professional training, certification and licensing for about 250,000 serving teachers.
TRCN Head of Media, Esther Chiwar, said the initiative was intended to equip teachers without recognised professional teaching qualifications with the knowledge, skills and certification required to practise.
The programme is being implemented through the Federal Government’s broader effort to strengthen professional standards in Nigeria’s education sector.
Six-month professionalisation route
The official ATPP platform describes the programme as a structured pathway for serving teachers who lack formal professional education training.
The programme offers pathways leading to qualifications including a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and Professional Diploma in Education (PDE), depending on participants’ existing qualifications and experience.
The official programme information lists a duration of six months and says successful participants become eligible for registration with TRCN in the appropriate category.
Examination and licensing
According to TRCN, teachers who complete the prescribed ATPP examination will be eligible to sit for the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) conducted by the council.
Candidates who successfully meet the requirements will then be registered and licensed to teach.
The government says the initiative is aimed at addressing a gap involving teachers who possess academic qualifications in their subject areas but have not undergone recognised teacher-training programmes or obtained professional teaching licences.
Professional standards
The official ATPP framework identifies professional knowledge, teaching practice, professional values and ethics, and continuing professional engagement among the areas covered by the programme.
It also includes subjects such as educational psychology, curriculum and pedagogy, inclusive education and safeguarding, assessment and quality assurance, and digital learning.
The programme is part of a wider Federal Government push to strengthen teacher quality and professional accountability across Nigerian schools.
The ATPP platform says applications for its first cohort are currently open, with the screening process scheduled to close on September 25, 2026.
