A member of the United States House of Representatives, John James, has moved a resolution calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, while urging that any future legal proceedings be conducted in line with Nigeria’s Constitution and international human rights obligations.
The latest move marks renewed attention from the U.S. Congress to Kanu’s prolonged detention and ongoing legal battle in Nigeria, a case that has continued to attract international interest.
Congressman Seeks Kanu’s Release
Speaking on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, James argued that Kanu’s continued detention raises concerns over due process and the rule of law.
According to the proposed resolution, the Nigerian Government should ensure that Kanu receives treatment consistent with constitutional guarantees and internationally recognised legal standards. The motion also calls for a fresh trial if legal proceedings continue.
