Danbature Abdul-Hamid makes sweeping claim about Peter Obi’s recognition in Northern Nigeria while defending President Bola Tinubu’s grassroots appeal ahead of the 2027 election.
Danbature Abdul-Hamid, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, has claimed that 99.9 per cent of Northern Nigerians do not know Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Abdul-Hamid made the assertion during an appearance on News Central Television, where he discussed the political standing of President Bola Tinubu and opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general election.
“99.9 percent of Northern Nigerians don’t even know who Peter Obi is,” he said.
The APC campaign council member made the claim while defending Tinubu’s grassroots appeal and arguing that the President’s political support extends beyond governors and other elected officials in Northern Nigeria.
His remarks come amid growing political competition for Northern votes, which are expected to play a significant role in determining the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi’s political prospects in the region have been the subject of debate among political figures, analysts and supporters of competing parties, particularly as opposition groups seek to expand their reach beyond their established strongholds.
However, Abdul-Hamid’s figure represents his own assertion. No supporting survey or independently verified data was provided in the account of his remarks to establish that 99.9 per cent of Northern Nigerians are unfamiliar with Obi.
The claim therefore highlights the intensity of the political messaging surrounding the region rather than providing a verified measure of Obi’s public recognition.
As the election approaches, the ability of presidential candidates to mobilise voters across Nigeria’s diverse regions is likely to remain a central factor in the campaign.
