A member of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumini Jibrin, has warned supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) against what he described as attacks and provocations directed at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the APC.

Jibrin issued the warning during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

His comments followed a confrontation between supporters of the rival political camps in Kano, where campaign symbols associated with both sides were reportedly burned.

NDC supporters reportedly burned a cap bearing Tinubu’s signature and the APC broom symbol, while APC supporters responded by burning caps associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Reacting to the incident, Jibrin said APC supporters would not stand by while Tinubu, the governor or the party were ridiculed.

He described possible retaliation as “self-defence”, arguing that his supporters were responding to what he characterised as provocation rather than initiating trouble.

Jibrin said:

“We will retaliate because we will not allow anybody to ridicule our president or our governor or our party.”

He also insisted that APC supporters in Kano were not looking for confrontation and were focused on campaigning.

The remarks have raised concerns about the tone of political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 election, particularly in Kano, one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states.

The Kano political environment is expected to be highly competitive in the next election cycle, with Tinubu’s APC facing opposition forces linked to Kwankwaso and the NDC.

Jibrin also claimed that the NDC knows it would lose the 2027 election in Kano, particularly in Kano South, which he described as a key swing area.

The comments come at the start of the 2027 campaign season, when political parties are expected to intensify rallies and grassroots mobilisation across the country.
