A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Theo Abu Agada, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and support Peter Obi.

Agada, who serves as the NDC’s Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, is calling on the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate to step aside in favour of the NDC candidate.

The appeal comes as the opposition landscape becomes increasingly fragmented ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku emerged as the ADC’s presidential candidate after the former vice president joined the party’s opposition coalition.

Peter Obi, meanwhile, is contesting under the NDC after leaving the ADC and joining the newly established political platform.

Agada’s call effectively places him in opposition to Atiku’s current presidential ambition and reflects the growing competition among opposition groups seeking to challenge President Tinubu.

The call is also notable given Agada’s position within the NDC’s communications structure.

He was appointed the party’s Director of New Media and Strategic Communications in June.

Agada has previously attracted controversy over his views concerning Peter Obi and the opposition political landscape.

However, I could not independently locate a strong primary-source report from today’s search that reproduces the exact “Step aside, back Peter Obi” statement.

For that reason, the headline should be attributed to Agada rather than presented as an established political development.

The underlying political dispute is nevertheless clear: the 2027 opposition field has become increasingly divided between competing platforms and presidential ambitions.

Atiku’s ADC candidacy and Obi’s NDC candidacy mean that the two politicians who previously worked within the same opposition coalition are now positioned as presidential rivals.

That rivalry could have significant implications for the opposition’s attempt to unseat Tinubu.
