The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, has died after a brief illness.
Wushishi reportedly died on Friday, August 28, 2026, in Niger State, with news of his death reaching Minna, the state capital, around the time of the Juma’at prayer.
His death has triggered mourning among his associates, political contacts and stakeholders in Niger State.
Wushishi’s Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, confirmed the development.
“Yes, it is true. The NPC chairman died after a brief illness,” Nwosu told Vanguard.
Several reports identified Wushishi as a former Secretary of the Niger State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before his appointment to head the National Population Commission.
He became chairman of the commission in December 2025, succeeding Nasir Isa Kwarra.
The National Population Commission is responsible for generating and managing critical population data used for planning and development, including preparations related to national census exercises.
The circumstances surrounding Wushishi’s illness and death remained limited at the time of publication, while details of his funeral arrangements were yet to be officially announced.
Tributes have begun to emerge from political associates and other stakeholders who described his death as a significant loss to Niger State and Nigeria.
Wushishi’s death comes less than a year after he assumed leadership of the population commission.
