The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The declaration was announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
The Federal Government congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and across the diaspora on the occasion and urged Nigerians to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
According to the Minister, the occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on compassion, humility, service to humanity and peaceful coexistence.
He also called on Nigerians to use the celebration to promote national unity, tolerance and understanding.
The holiday means federal public offices and institutions covered by the declaration will observe Tuesday as a work-free day.
The government urged Nigerians to celebrate responsibly and peacefully while maintaining respect for people of other faiths.
Eid ul Mawlid is observed by Muslims around the world to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
