The Foundation for Democracy in Africa (FDA) has welcomed the decision by the Department of State Services (DSS) to suspend the prosecution of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore until after the 2027 presidential election.
The group described the move as a positive step for Nigeria’s democratic process, saying it demonstrates respect for due process, the rule of law and the integrity of the electoral process.
The DSS had directed its lawyers to seek an adjournment of the case, with reports indicating that the decision was linked to concerns about allowing Sowore to fully exercise his constitutional right to contest the 2027 election.
Sowore is facing prosecution over social media posts in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.” The case has generated significant debate over the balance between criminal prosecution, freedom of expression and the rights of political candidates during an election period.
The FDA said the latest development should be viewed within the broader context of protecting democratic competition and ensuring that political disputes do not undermine the electoral process.
The decision comes as Nigeria’s political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
