The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld the conviction and cumulative 490-year prison sentence imposed on former Managing Director of the Nigeria Export-Import Bank (NEXIM Bank), Robert Orya, over a ₦2.4 billion fraud case.
A three-member panel of the appellate court dismissed Orya’s appeal, finding no merit in the challenge against the earlier judgment of the Federal Capital Territory High Court.
Orya was previously convicted and sentenced to a cumulative 490 years’ imprisonment following allegations involving the abuse of his position while heading NEXIM Bank.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had accused the former bank chief of using his position to facilitate loans involving companies and individuals linked to the alleged scheme.
According to reports on the case, the EFCC alleged that a company connected to Orya obtained loans using the identities of non-existent persons and other individuals without their consent, with the facilities subsequently remaining unpaid.
The original sentence was handed down in February 2026, when the court found Orya guilty in the ₦2.4 billion fraud case.
The Court of Appeal’s latest ruling means the earlier conviction and sentence remain in force.
The judgment represents another significant development in the EFCC’s prosecution of high-profile financial crime cases and comes amid continued public debate over accountability within government-owned financial institutions.
