President urges political, traditional, and community leaders to pursue lasting peace following deadly Jos attack

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved ₦2 billion in relief support for victims of the recent attack in Plateau State, while calling on local leaders to take decisive steps toward ending recurring violence in the region.

The approval was announced on April 29, 2026, during a high-level meeting between the President and a delegation of Plateau stakeholders at the State House in Abuja. The relief package is targeted at victims of the March 29 attack in Angwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area.

During the meeting, Tinubu emphasised the need for unity, tolerance, and collective responsibility among leaders across political, religious, and ethnic lines. He urged stakeholders to address the root causes of the crisis and work toward sustainable peace.

“No one benefits from conflict. Leaders must return home with open minds and commit to finding lasting solutions to the cycle of violence,” the President said during the engagement.

The meeting, which lasted several hours, brought together a 32-member delegation including Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, former governors, traditional rulers, lawmakers, and youth representatives. Participants acknowledged long-standing issues such as ethnic tensions, religious divisions, and farmer-herder conflicts as key drivers of instability in the state.

In response, stakeholders pledged renewed commitment to peacebuilding efforts and agreed on the need to revisit past government reports and implement actionable recommendations to prevent further violence.

The intervention forms part of the federal government’s broader efforts to address humanitarian needs and restore stability in Plateau State, which has experienced repeated outbreaks of communal violence over the years.

The move signals both immediate relief for affected communities and a renewed push for long-term peace in one of Nigeria’s most conflict-prone regions.
