The APC chieftain said traders at the market tried to provoke him during a visit to buy spare parts for his vehicle.

APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe has denied reports claiming he was beaten at the Ladipo Market in Lagos, following an incident that drew attention online after videos showed traders booing him during a visit.

According to Igbokwe, he visited the market on June 5 to purchase spare parts for his car when some traders at the market, whom he described as mostly of Igbo extraction, began taunting and provoking him.

Videos circulating online showed traders booing him and calling him names, fueling claims on social media that he had been physically attacked.

However, in a video shared online on Friday afternoon, Igbokwe dismissed the reports, insisting that nobody assaulted him.

He further warned against any future attempt to attack him, stating that if such had happened, the market could face closure for up to one year.

“If they try it again, they will collect and they will collect big. They may not see that market in the next one year. This is Lagos not South East,” he said.

The development has once again placed attention on the tense intersections between politics, identity, and public engagement in highly populated commercial spaces within Lagos.
