The House of Representatives advanced constitutional reforms aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s security and governance framework.
Nigeria’s House of Representatives has adopted the report on the proposed establishment of state police and approved 18 constitutional amendment clauses as part of ongoing efforts to reform governance and strengthen security structures across the country.
The report was adopted during plenary presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, as lawmakers considered proposals tied to constitutional amendments and policing reforms.
The development marks a significant legislative step in the long-running national debate over decentralised policing, especially amid continued concerns surrounding insecurity in different parts of the country.
The proposed framework seeks to allow states to establish police formations through legislation passed by their respective State Houses of Assembly, while also meeting nationally prescribed operational standards.
Lawmakers also approved 18 constitutional amendment clauses linked to broader governance reforms during the same sitting.
The constitutional amendment process is expected to proceed through additional legislative procedures before any final implementation takes effect.
