The electoral commission says it has not yet received its budgetary allocation for the 2027 general elections but insists preparations for the nationwide exercise are already underway.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is yet to receive the budgetary allocation earmarked for the conduct of the 2027 general elections, even as preparations for the polls continue.

The disclosure was made by INEC National Commissioner in charge of Voter Education and Publicity, Mohammed Haruna, during a cross-sectoral interactive session in Abuja organised by the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) in partnership with Legis360. The meeting brought together representatives of political parties, civil society organisations and INEC officials to review the recently concluded Ekiti State governorship election and discuss preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Haruna stated that although the commission is still awaiting the release of the approved funds, its preparations have not stopped. According to him, INEC remains committed to laying the necessary groundwork for the successful conduct of the next general election.

Earlier in the year, the commission proposed a budget of ₦873.78 billion for the 2027 general elections, with major allocations planned for election operations, technology deployment and capital expenditure required for nationwide electoral activities.

The update provides insight into the commission’s current level of preparedness as Nigeria gradually begins planning for another nationwide electoral cycle. While funding has yet to be released, INEC maintains that its planning process remains active pending the disbursement of the budgetary allocation.
