Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports that he is lobbying to become the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign organisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike said his commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election does not depend on securing an official campaign position.
The former Rivers State governor reportedly said he would work to deliver both Rivers State and the FCT for Tinubu in 2027, regardless of whether he is appointed campaign director-general.
His comments come amid growing speculation over the structure of the ruling party’s campaign organisation ahead of the next presidential election.
Wike, a prominent member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has remained a strong supporter of the Tinubu administration despite the political differences between the president’s APC and the PDP.
The FCT minister has repeatedly maintained his support for Tinubu and has positioned himself as part of the political camp backing the president’s re-election bid.
Wike’s latest comments seek to dismiss speculation that he is seeking a formal campaign appointment, while simultaneously reaffirming his political commitment to the president.
“I don’t need to be campaign DG to deliver Rivers and FCT,” Wike was reported to have said.
The Rivers dimension is particularly significant given Wike’s longstanding political influence in the state and the importance of the South-South region in presidential elections.
His claim that he can deliver both Rivers and the FCT to Tinubu is likely to attract political attention as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of 2027.
The former governor has also remained influential in national political discussions despite the continuing divisions within the PDP.
