The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has concluded a series of emergency strategy meetings and is preparing to challenge the Federal High Court judgment that nullified its registration as a political party.

The leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has concluded marathon emergency meetings to adopt a new legal and political strategy following the Federal High Court judgment that set aside the party’s registration. The meetings brought together the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, National Leader Seriake Dickson, members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and other senior stakeholders ahead of an appeal against the ruling.

The strategy sessions followed Friday’s judgment by the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, which vacated its earlier order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC.

According to a senior party official, the leadership held back-to-back closed-door meetings on Saturday and Sunday to finalise its legal approach before filing an appeal at the Court of Appeal. The source said the party’s National Legal Adviser, Reuben Egwuaba, is expected to play a key role in the legal proceedings, although the identity of the lead counsel has not been disclosed.

The latest development adds another legal dimension to the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 general election. The court ruling has triggered a series of political and legal responses from the party, which insists it remains committed to participating fully in the electoral process while pursuing available judicial remedies.

NDC National Secretary Ikenna Enekweizu confirmed that the party would file its appeal, but declined to reveal who would head the legal team until the court processes are submitted.

He described the Lokoja judgment as unprecedented and maintained that the party remained confident of success on appeal. Enekweizu also expressed confidence that all NDC candidates, from the presidential ticket to House of Assembly candidates, would eventually appear on the ballot for the 2027 elections.

With the appeal process set to commence, the NDC says it has concluded internal consultations and is moving forward with its legal strategy while maintaining that it will continue preparations for the 2027 general election.
