The Nigerian Senate has approved a combined ₦403.1 billion budget for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), comprising ₦170.1 billion for the 2025 fiscal year and ₦233.9 billion for 2026, with lawmakers saying the funds will strengthen policing, improve infrastructure and enhance personnel welfare.
The Senate has approved the 2025 and 2026 budget proposals of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, allocating a total of ₦403.1 billion to support security operations, improve police infrastructure and boost the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.
The approvals followed the consideration and adoption of reports presented by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs during Thursday’s plenary.
The approved budgets comprise ₦170.1 billion for the 2025 fiscal year and ₦233.9 billion for the 2026 fiscal year.
Presenting the committee’s report, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Yunus Akintunde, said the allocations are intended to support the statutory mandate of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund.
According to the committee, the funds will be used for the procurement of operational vehicles and security equipment, rehabilitation of police barracks and stations, training and retraining of personnel, as well as other interventions aimed at strengthening policing nationwide.
For the 2026 budget, lawmakers approved funding for personnel costs, overhead expenditure and capital projects designed to improve the operational effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force.
Lawmakers expressed optimism that the approved budgets would enhance the provision of critical equipment, improve officers’ welfare and strengthen the country’s response to terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and other security threats.
The committee also recommended that priority be given to projects that directly improve operational capacity, infrastructure and personnel development while urging the Police Trust Fund to strengthen monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure accountability and value for money.
The Senate directed the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to ensure the prompt implementation of the approved budgets in line with its statutory responsibilities.
Lawmakers also encouraged the Fund to maintain transparency in project execution and ensure that the appropriated resources translate into measurable improvements in policing and internal security across the country.
The approval represents one of the largest funding commitments to the Nigeria Police Trust Fund since its establishment. As Nigeria continues to grapple with terrorism, kidnapping and other security challenges, lawmakers expressed hope that the allocations would significantly strengthen policing capabilities, improve officers’ welfare and enhance public safety nationwide.
