Monarch urges adherence to due process in chieftaincy matters as dispute emerges in Oyo market leadership selection

The Alaafin of Oyo has cautioned against what he described as an illegal and unauthorized installation of a market leader in Oyo State, warning that such actions undermine established traditional procedures.

The monarch issued the warning following reports of the alleged emergence of a new market head without the approval of the appropriate traditional authorities, a development he described as irregular and capable of causing unrest within the community.

In a statement attributed to the palace, the Alaafin emphasized that the selection and installation of market leaders fall under defined customary processes, which must be strictly followed to maintain order and legitimacy.

He stressed that any appointment carried out outside these established norms would not be recognized by the Oyo traditional institution, urging those involved to immediately halt such actions.

The monarch also called on relevant stakeholders, including local authorities and community leaders, to respect traditional structures and avoid actions that could trigger conflict or division within markets across the state.

While details surrounding the disputed installation remain unclear, the issue highlights ongoing tensions in some parts of Oyo State over leadership and control of market associations, which often play significant economic and social roles in local communities.

The Alaafin’s warning reinforces the importance of due process in traditional governance, as authorities seek to prevent escalation and maintain stability within Oyo’s market and community structures.
