Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised 16-year-old Max Dowman after the teenager scored twice in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town, while stressing the importance of carefully managing his development.
Dowman produced a standout performance in the third-round tie, scoring Arsenal’s opening goal before adding a second after the interval.
His performance prompted renewed attention on one of the club’s most highly regarded young players.
Arteta, however, stressed that Arsenal must protect Dowman as he develops and avoid placing unnecessary pressure on a teenager who is still adapting to senior football.
The manager said the youngster’s performance was highly encouraging and described the quality of his display as exceptional.
Arteta’s comments came after Dowman became only the second 16-year-old to score a brace for a Premier League club in all competitions, matching a feat previously achieved by Wayne Rooney for Everton.
Arsenal defeated Ipswich 4-2, with Dowman among the standout performers in a match that also saw goals from Noni Madueke and Mikel Merino.
Arteta’s emphasis on protecting the teenager reflects the club’s approach to managing young players as they transition into senior football.
Despite his impressive performance, the Arsenal manager has also indicated that Dowman will continue to have to earn his playing opportunities rather than receive automatic selection based solely on potential.
