Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has warned that retaining the Premier League title will require an even higher level of performance from his players, insisting that the team is prepared for the challenge ahead.
Arteta spoke after Arsenal began the new campaign with an emphatic 3–0 victory over Manchester City in the 2026 Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
The victory provided an early indication of Arsenal’s determination to build on their success from last season, when they ended their long wait for the Premier League title.
Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and captain Martin Ødegaard secured a convincing victory for Arsenal against a Manchester City side beginning a new era under manager Enzo Maresca.
Arteta acknowledged that winning the league once is difficult, but successfully defending the title presents an entirely different challenge.
The Arsenal boss said his players understand the demands that come with attempting to remain champions and are prepared to embrace the pressure.
“We know winning the Premier League again will demand something special, and we are ready for it,” Arteta said.
The Spaniard has transformed Arsenal into one of England’s leading sides since taking charge, guiding the club from a period of inconsistency to sustained domestic and European competitiveness.
Arsenal enter the 2026/27 Premier League season as defending champions after ending a 22-year wait for the league title. Reuters noted that defending the Premier League crown is a particularly difficult task, with only three managers previously achieving back-to-back titles in the competition’s history.
The Community Shield victory has therefore strengthened expectations around Arsenal ahead of the new league campaign.
Arteta, however, has stressed the importance of maintaining the standards that helped the club reach the top rather than becoming complacent after last season’s success.
The Arsenal manager also praised the mentality displayed by his players against City, describing their hunger and desire as important qualities for the season ahead.
Arsenal will now turn their attention to the Premier League campaign as they attempt to successfully defend their title and compete for further honours.
