The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered day-to-day proceedings in the case involving suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari and his co-defendants as the defence phase of the trial resumes.
Justice Emeka Nwite gave the directive on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, seeking to ensure that the proceedings continue without unnecessary delays. The case had previously been adjourned indefinitely after the judge was shortlisted for elevation to the Court of Appeal.
Defence Resumes in Cocaine-Related Case
The case is being prosecuted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and concerns allegations involving Kyari and other suspended police officers.
During the resumed proceedings, prosecution counsel, Sunday Joseph, informed the court that the parties had agreed to continue the trial while awaiting further developments concerning the judge’s proposed elevation.
The defence, however, requested adequate time to review court records and organise the attendance of witnesses.
Counsel also explained that some members of the legal team were unavailable because of other professional engagements, while a defence witness was reportedly outside Nigeria on official assignment.
Court Seeks Expeditious Conclusion
Justice Nwite said the court was concerned about bringing the matter to a conclusion without avoidable delays.
The judge subsequently directed that proceedings should continue from day to day until the trial is completed.
The case was adjourned until October 5, 2026, for further defence proceedings.
The order is intended to accelerate the trial, but it does not determine the defendants’ guilt or innocence. The court must still consider the evidence and arguments presented by both the prosecution and defence.
