The Delta State Police Command has arrested popular Asaba-based content creator Ifeanyi Ogbonna, widely known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over allegations that he raped a 20-year-old woman who later died. Police say the arrest followed a formal petition from the victim’s family, while investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding both the alleged assault and her death.
A well-known social media personality in Delta State is now at the centre of a high-profile criminal investigation after police confirmed his arrest over allegations of rape involving a young woman who later died.
The Delta State Police Command announced on Wednesday that Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known online as “Odogwu of Asaba,” is in custody following allegations that a 20-year-old woman was sexually assaulted after travelling to Asaba at his invitation.
According to police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe, the Command received a petition alleging that the woman travelled from her hometown to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after Ogbonna reportedly invited her to participate in a content creation training programme he had advertised on his social media platforms.
Investigators say the petition alleged that after arriving in Asaba, the woman was taken to a hotel, where she was allegedly raped and physically assaulted.
Police said the woman later returned home in a distressed emotional state and reportedly narrated her experience to members of her family.
According to the police account, she also recorded a video before her death in which she allegedly described what had happened and the emotional trauma she experienced following the incident.
Authorities further stated that she later ingested a poisonous substance and was taken to hospital, where she eventually died while receiving treatment. Investigators are working to establish the complete sequence of events leading to her death.
Following receipt of the petition, Delta State Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi reportedly directed the Area Command in Effurun to begin an immediate investigation.
Police said detectives subsequently arrested Ogbonna, who is currently in custody.
According to the Command, the suspect has made statements during preliminary interrogation, while detectives continue gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and reviewing available materials connected to the case.
The arrest has generated widespread reactions across social media because of Ogbonna’s popularity as a digital content creator.
Women’s rights advocates and civil society organisations have called for a transparent investigation, stressing that the allegations should be thoroughly examined through the criminal justice process while respecting the legal rights of all parties involved.
Police have emphasised that investigations remain ongoing and that no conclusion should be drawn until all evidence has been examined.
The case is expected to remain under close public scrutiny as investigators continue their work. If formal charges are eventually filed, the matter will proceed through the courts, where the allegations against the suspect will be tested. For now, police say their priority is conducting a comprehensive investigation to establish the full facts surrounding the alleged rape and the young woman’s subsequent death.
