Anti-graft agency raises alarm over rising internet fraud among undergraduates in Nigerian universities.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised concern that about six out of every ten Nigerian university students are involved in cybercrime.

EFCC Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoyede, disclosed this during a conference in Kano State.

He said intelligence and field operations show widespread participation of students in internet fraud activities.

The agency described the trend as a serious threat to Nigeria’s future workforce and national development.

Cybercrime, locally referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo,” has remained a major enforcement focus for the EFCC.

Education stakeholders have previously linked the trend to unemployment, peer influence, and economic pressure.

The EFCC has intensified awareness campaigns and enforcement operations in tertiary institutions.

The agency warned that unchecked involvement could undermine academic integrity nationwide.
