The Federal Government has announced plans to activate at least 200 new telecommunications sites before December as part of efforts to expand network coverage across underserved areas.
The initiative is expected to improve connectivity for more than 20 million Nigerians currently living in communities with inadequate or no reliable telecommunications services.
According to the government, each of the new sites is expected to serve communities with populations of between 5,000 and 10,000 people.
The first tower under the programme has reportedly been deployed at Kura village near Abuja, with the rollout subsequently extending to communities in the Niger Delta.
The project forms part of a broader national telecommunications infrastructure programme targeting thousands of underserved communities.
Earlier government plans indicated that about 3,700 telecommunications towers would be deployed across Nigeria beginning in October 2026, with the wider initiative designed to connect more than 20 million Nigerians.
The expansion is expected to improve access to mobile communications, digital financial services, online education, e-commerce and other technology-dependent services.
The government has increasingly identified digital connectivity as an important component of economic inclusion, particularly for rural and underserved communities.
If the December target is achieved, the activation of the first 200 sites would represent an early milestone in the broader effort to reduce Nigeria’s digital divide.
