Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has urged members of Nigeria’s diplomatic community to exercise restraint when commenting on the country’s 2027 elections, stressing respect for national sovereignty and democratic processes.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has cautioned foreign diplomats in Nigeria against making unguarded public comments on the country’s 2027 general elections.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu issued the warning on Thursday during an interaction with members of the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja.
The minister stressed the importance of respecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and democratic institutions as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to the minister, the Federal Government remains committed to a peaceful, free, fair and credible electoral process.
Her comments place the conduct of foreign diplomatic missions within the broader principle of non-interference in the domestic political affairs of sovereign states.
Foreign diplomats routinely engage with host governments, political institutions and civil society organisations as part of their diplomatic responsibilities. However, public comments on sensitive domestic political issues can carry diplomatic implications, particularly during an election period.
Nigeria is already entering an increasingly active political cycle ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political parties, candidates and civil society groups placing greater attention on electoral credibility and democratic institutions.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu became Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2026 following President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of her to the position after the resignation of Yusuf Tuggar.
The ministry has also continued to engage Nigeria’s diplomatic community on wider foreign-policy priorities, including regional stability, security and economic diplomacy.
