Oyo governor says constitutional limitations prevent states from fully tackling growing insecurity.

Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that the current constitutional arrangement placing security agencies under federal control has weakened the ability of state governments to effectively tackle kidnappings and other security threats.

Makinde stated that despite being recognised as the Chief Security Officer of Oyo State, he lacks direct control over the security agencies operating within the state.

The governor’s remarks come amid growing concerns over incidents of kidnapping and abduction in parts of Oyo State and across the country.

According to him, the constitutional structure has created limitations for governors who are expected to guarantee security but do not have operational authority over the agencies responsible for enforcing law and order.

Makinde maintained that the situation continues to affect efforts by state governments to respond swiftly and effectively to security challenges.
