Senator Adams Oshiomhole has thrown his weight behind the use of lethal force against armed criminals, saying security operatives should not hesitate to shoot those carrying weapons while confronting law enforcement.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole has endorsed a tougher security response against violent crime, insisting that armed criminals should be shot on sight during confrontations with security agencies.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News, the former Edo State governor criticised what he described as an apologetic tone in recent comments by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, regarding the use of force against armed suspects.

Oshiomhole argued that security personnel should not hesitate when confronted by individuals carrying illegal firearms or posing an immediate threat.
According to him, officers have a responsibility to protect innocent citizens and themselves from heavily armed criminals, stressing that decisive action is necessary in the fight against insecurity.
Comments Follow Police Clarification
His remarks come shortly after the Nigeria Police Force clarified that the Inspector-General of Police did not issue a blanket “shoot-on-sight” directive, following widespread public debate over reports attributed to the police leadership.
Oshiomhole, however, maintained that where armed criminals confront security operatives, officers should not hesitate to use lawful force to neutralise the threat.
Debate Over Crime-Fighting Strategy
The senator’s position has generated fresh debate over the balance between aggressive crime-fighting measures and respect for human rights and due process.
Security analysts note that while officers may use lethal force in situations involving imminent threats, such actions remain subject to Nigeria’s laws, rules of engagement and constitutional protections.
