A Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Dr Torngee Malu, has rejected the idea that a human kidney can be assigned a straightforward monetary value, saying lawful organ donation should not be treated as an ordinary commercial transaction.
Malu made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, amid an ongoing investigation into allegations surrounding kidney harvesting and human trafficking in Nigeria.
Asked about the appropriate financial value of a kidney donated through lawful procedures, the surgeon explained that the law permits reimbursement or compensation in appropriate circumstances, rather than establishing a fixed selling price for a human organ.
His comments come at a time when allegations of illegal organ removal and kidney trafficking have generated widespread public concern.
Malu’s position also highlights the distinction between legitimate organ donation carried out under medical and legal safeguards and the illegal commercialisation or exploitation of human organs.
The renewed discussion has placed greater attention on the need for transparent medical procedures, informed consent and stronger safeguards against exploitation of vulnerable people.
