Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling cancer.

The veteran Yoruba actor died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a battle with advanced cancer, with his death confirmed by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an emotional live session on Instagram.

The confirmation came only days after Ogogo’s family publicly disclosed that the actor was battling stage-four cancer and appealed to medical professionals and hospitals for urgent assistance.

His daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, had made separate emotional appeals for help after revealing the severity of their father’s condition.

Kira had disclosed that doctors treating the 66-year-old actor had informed the family that chemotherapy could no longer be administered, prompting the family to seek other medical options.

Daughter confirms his death

Kira Taiwo confirmed her father’s death during a live video on Sunday.

The announcement comes just five days after the family was forced to debunk a false report claiming that Ogogo had already died.

On August 18, his daughter Lima Taiwo dismissed that earlier report as fake and urged members of the public to stop spreading unverified information.

At that time, the family had confirmed that the actor was seriously ill and battling stage-four cancer.

The situation subsequently deteriorated.

Family had sought urgent medical help

Ogogo’s daughters had appealed specifically for medical assistance, rather than financial donations.

Lima said the family was looking for hospitals and medical professionals capable of taking on their father’s case, while Kira disclosed the stage-four cancer diagnosis and the difficulty surrounding further chemotherapy.

The family’s public appeal came after they said they had only become aware of the seriousness of the actor’s condition about three weeks earlier.

Kira also explained that although arrangements had reportedly been made for possible treatment abroad, doctors considered her father too physically fragile to withstand an international flight.

Doctor explained the chemotherapy situation

The family’s account that hospitals could no longer continue chemotherapy also prompted medical discussion.

Dr Olusina Ajidahun explained that stopping chemotherapy does not necessarily mean that a patient has been abandoned or that all medical care has ended.

He said patients with advanced cancer may be moved towards palliative care after chemotherapy and other disease-directed treatments have been explored or when further treatment is no longer considered beneficial.

That distinction is important in reporting Ogogo’s final days because claims that hospitals had simply “refused to treat” him were subsequently described by fact-checkers as potentially misleading without the full medical context.

A career spanning more than four decades

Ogogo was one of the recognisable figures in Nigeria’s Yoruba-language film industry.

Born Taiwo Hassan on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State, he built a career spanning more than four decades in acting and filmmaking.

He featured in hundreds of Nigerian films and became particularly known for his work in Yoruba cinema.

His death represents the loss of one of the industry’s veteran performers, whose career connected earlier generations of Yoruba theatre and film with contemporary Nollywood.

A difficult final week

Ogogo’s death comes after an especially difficult final week for his family.

On August 18, reports of his death circulated online, only for his daughter Lima to publicly reject them.

At the time, the family was instead asking for help finding medical professionals who could continue treating the actor.

Five days later, that earlier denial was overtaken by the family’s confirmation that Ogogo had died.

His death closes a significant chapter in the career of a veteran who spent decades contributing to Nigerian cinema.

The family has yet to publicly announce details of his burial arrangements as of the time of this report.
