The legal dispute surrounding the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified after a Federal High Court reversed the same judgment that had earlier compelled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the party, adding fresh uncertainty to its participation in the 2027 elections.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing a fresh legal challenge after a Federal High Court in Lokoja set aside its earlier judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the party. The latest decision effectively reverses the legal recognition that paved the way for the party’s registration, placing its status back before the courts.

The NDC was initially recognised after the Federal High Court ruled in its favour and ordered INEC to register it as a political party. However, following an application challenging that judgment, the same court vacated its earlier decision.

The ruling has significant implications for the party’s preparations ahead of the 2027 general election, as questions have emerged over the validity of candidates nominated on its platform. Despite the judgment, INEC has stated that it will not take any action until it receives and reviews the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the court’s decision.

The court ruling has drawn widespread political attention because the NDC recently emerged as a platform for several opposition figures preparing for the 2027 elections. The development underscores how judicial proceedings have become a significant factor in shaping the country’s evolving political landscape ahead of the next general election.

The NDC has rejected the judgment, insisting it remains a valid political platform and announcing plans to challenge the ruling at the Court of Appeal.

Meanwhile, INEC has maintained that it is awaiting the Certified True Copy of the judgment before making any lawful decision regarding the party’s status.

With the NDC proceeding to the Court of Appeal and INEC yet to act on the judgment pending receipt of the court’s certified order, the legal battle over the party’s registration remains unresolved as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
